Solar panel installation in Carlsbad, CA

A new home solar system still needs a permit and still connects under the utility's current billing rules. A licensed solar contractor designs the system and writes the contract.

What a new system costs and connects to

Among Carlsbad residential systems approved from January 2025 to August 2026 that reported a cost, state interconnection records show a median total of $29,040, with the middle half between $12,000 and $41,225. Those totals include storage where it was installed, and they are our count of a public download, not a quote for your roof.

New customers connect under the net billing tariff the CPUC set up for applications since April 15, 2023. SDG&E calls it the Solar Billing Plan. Power the system makes is used on site first, and extra power sent to the grid earns an hourly export credit. SDG&E says its export pricing is locked for nine years from the date the system is allowed to operate. The permit steps are in the permit guide, and the cost picture, including why a federal credit no longer applies, is in the cost guide.

New installation questions

Is $29,040 the price of my system?

No. That is the median total cost reported on Carlsbad residential interconnection records for 2025 to August 2026. It includes storage where it was installed. It is not a quote, and we do not quote your job on a call.

Does a new Carlsbad system qualify for the old net metering rates?

No. Applications since April 15, 2023 take service on the net billing tariff, which usually pays less for exported power than the retail rate. The tariff is explained in the net billing guide.
