Solar installation and repair in Vista, near Carlsbad, CA
The permit steps in Vista differ from the neighboring cities, and the timeline depends on which path the contractor can use.
What Vista requires for a home system
The City of Vista's information bulletin says a residential solar system under 10 kW needs an electrical permit, with no planning review and no fire department approval if the plans show conventional fire setbacks. Plans submitted at the counter are not reviewed over the counter and can take up to 30 business days. The bulletin points contractors to SolarApp+ for faster issuance, and the city's FAQ says only qualifying SolarApp+ photovoltaic projects can be submitted online.
A contractor also needs a current City of Vista business license before a permit can be issued. Ask the contractor we connect you with which path they plan to use and how long they expect the permit to take. The general steps are in the permit guide.
